REQUIREMENTS

Since North Carolina does not offer preschool for all children, children have to qualify for one of the preschool services in order to attend one of the classrooms. Parents will be unable to register your child(ren) until they have been accepted.

Requirements for School Enrollment; Other Than Kindergarten

Documentation required at the time of enrollment: Proof of Residency – Proof of homeownership, signed lease agreement, utility bill (gas, water, electric), rental receipt, current listing on income tax forms, personal property tax listings. If the document provided is not from within the past 30 days, additional proof may be requested. (A driver’s license is not adequate proof of residency). At times, schools may request additional proof of residency. Proof of Age – birth certificate, hospital certificate, etc. Grade Placement – withdrawal form, transcript, or report card. Immunization/Health Assessment Record – must meet NC immunization/health assessment requirements and the Board of Education’s immunization policy. Johnston County Career and Technical Leadership Academy (CTLA) is a five-year Early College program serving students in grades 9-13. Students complete high school requirements while earning an Associate Degree in one of five pathways: Nurse Aide, Information Technology (IT), Applied Engineering, Paralegal Technology, and Early Childhood. 1. AP Capstone

AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program that provides students with an opportunity to engage in challenging scholarly practice of the core academic skills necessary for successful college completion. The program is built on the foundation of two courses– AP Seminar and AP Research– and is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth, discipline-specific study provided through AP courses. It cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical evidence-based decisions.  The AP Capstone Program is a two-year commitment. Students will complete AP Seminar first and AP Research the following year. Students must earn a 3 or higher in AP Seminar to move forward with AP Research. This program is currently paired with your English course. This program is offered to 9th-11th grade students. Seniors can take AP Research after successfully completing AP Seminar. Students can be dual-enrolled with their base school. Successful completion of the Capstone program requires students to be highly motivated, team-oriented, and intellectually curious. This program sets students apart from their peers as they navigate the complexities of applying for college and earning scholarships.

2. AVID

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system that utilizes proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and a career. However, at Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS), AVID students and teachers will tell you it’s much more than a program; it’s a family, a support system that allows students to feel confident in taking risks that will help them develop critical skills in the areas of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). SSS AVID is committed to helping its students fulfill their dreams to attend college and become well-rounded, positive contributors to a global society. 

3. Fire Science Program

Johnston County Public Schools Fire Science Program provides an opportunity to students to earn the certifications and a degree to be employable and promotable within the ranks of the Fire Service upon completion of the program. The program is a partnership between Johnston County Public Schools, Johnston Community College, The Office of The State Fire Marshal, and the professional men and women of the Johnston County Fire Service. 

4. International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) and IB Career-related (CP) Programs are academically challenging and balanced programs of education with final examinations that prepare students, aged 16 to 19. For success at university and life beyond. Both IB programs are designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being of students and have gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. 5. IDEAL Academy at South Johnston

The IDEAL Academy at South Johnston High School is a 4-year opportunity for students to obtain skills and college credits in environmental sciences, agriculture, and leadership. This unique opportunity is a collaboration between Johnston County Public Schools and the University of Mount Olive. Students have the opportunity to obtain a high school diploma and associate’s degree within 4 years at South Johnston. The IDEAL Academy has 4 pathways that students are eligible for: Agricultural Career, Animal Science, Horticultural Science, and the UMO Associate’s Degree pathways. IDEAL students that elect to take the Associate’s Degree Pathway will enroll in classes at Johnston Community College and the University of Mount Olive. This academy utilizes blended high school classes that pair academic core and agricultural curricula. Hands-on learning is blended with PBL instruction and internships to provide students with meaningful and engaging instruction. Students participating in the academy will have the opportunity to participate in SJHS Athletics and many other activities at the school. 

6. JoCo TEACH (Teaching Educators and Coming Home)

The JoCo TEACH Academy located at Smithfield-Selma High School is a 4-year opportunity that identifies incoming freshman that is interested in becoming future teachers.  The Academy is a collaboration between Johnston County Public Schools, Johnston Community College, and N.C. State University. Students will begin a dual enrollment program that leads to an Associate Degree in Teaching. Students will then continue through N.C. State College of Education’s teacher preparation program. Some of the teacher licensure degrees that will be offered by NC State are Elementary Education, Math Education, Technology Education, English Education, Science Education, Middle Grades Language Arts & Social Studies, and Agriculture Education. NC State also offers an ESL Add-On Licensure. The ultimate goal of the JoCo TEACH Academy is to identify promising students and prepare them for the teaching profession and have them return to Johnston County to teach in Johnston County Public Schools.

7. CTLA Johnston County Career and Technical Leadership Academy

Johnston County Early College Academy is a five-year program located on the campus of Johnston Community College. Students are dual-enrolled in high school and college classes. Upon graduation from JCECA, students will have obtained their high school diploma and a two-year Associates’ Degree for college transfer. Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships are key components that guide our students daily. 

Johnston County Schools CALENDAR

Enrollment procedures and requirements vary from district to district and state to state.  JCPS has implemented ScribEnroll, an online registration process for students. This process has increased efficiency and effectiveness in collecting the required registration data. If you do not have access to a computer or tablet, you should plan to contact your school’s data manager or registrar for assistance in completing the enrollment process. An email account will be required for online registration. If you do not have an email account, you will have an opportunity to create one from the online registration form.
