Global Voices Essay Contest
The Global Network for the Advancement of Youth at Michigan State University will build on the legacy of MSU’s international commitment and create innovative solutions that will improve the lives of millions of young people around the world. In collaboration with other MSU programs, such as the Partnership for the African Association, the Center for Asian Studies and the MSU number one program for teacher education, GYAN is increasing the global commitment of the university and taking advantage of the concession values of University lands to address young people’s aspirations for sustainable global prosperity. Almost a quarter of the world’s population are young people between 10 and 24 years old, and 87 percent of them live in developing countries. One of the biggest challenges facing these young people is unemployment, and six out of 10 of the approximately 120 million young people who join the labor market every year cannot find work. Efforts to support youth employability must increase and develop dramatically to keep up with this rapid population growth. Choosing among several topics, participants send a 600-900 word essay on how they are addressing a challenge facing their communities. A panel of professors and staff from Michigan State University (MSU) reviews the essays and GYAN awards prizes to the three main entrances. GYAN also publishes his essays, along with the honourable mention essays within each topic, in a book to publicize the voices of these junior leaders to the world. The best essays in each category will be published in a book: Global Voices Vol. II – A collection of essays by Latin America and Caribbean youth.
